NMBC visits Pajarito Elementary
Each year NMBC champions arts in education for New Mexico school children through school shows at local theaters and onsite History of Dance and Discovery Workshops. Yearly, these efforts have given 8,400 New Mexico school children access to dance arts.
The History of Dance and Discovery Workshops, currently beginning its 13th year, will bring NMBC directly into 7 elementary schools and 1 middle school within the Albuquerque Public School (APS) system and present one-hour programs, giving the students and their teachers the opportunity to learn about the history of dance, watch live performances by professional dancers and participate in dance as an expressive art. Approximately 3,000 students will benefit at no charge. Performances are funded by the City of Albuquerque Urban Enhancement Trust fund and will occur throughout the fall and spring.
The Nutcracker Ballet school shows are key to NMBC achieving its goals of supporting arts education for children as far away as Gallup, Los Alamos and Taos. In particular, these school shows serve Title I schools such as Jemez and Zuni Pueblo by providing free access to professionally staged dance theater productions for students in rural, economically challenged areas. Many of these students would not otherwise be able to attend performances in a venue such as Popejoy.
